Culvert Glossary of Terms

Road Name: Road name
Road Type: gravel, paved, dirt
State of AK Site ID: ADFG fish passage program site id
CRWP Survey ID: CRWP unique identifier
Creek Name: established name from maps and/or local names
Lat: datum nad 83
Long: datum nad 83
Anadramous Waters: AWC # listed if yes, y-yes, n- no, U-unknown. “Yes” if fish presence is determined by 2010 surveys; “no” if no habitat and/or not connected to anadromous waters; “unknown” if waterway has potential habitat and/or connectivity to anadromous waters but is not in the catalog or fish precense has not been confirmed.
Proximity to Anadromous Waters (miles) : If connected to anadromous waters, proximity was measured in stream miles to the nearest anadromous waterway.
ADF&G Fish Passage Score : Green, Gray, Red. Includes who conducted survey and when.
Prioritization: Identifies prioritization in 4 quadrants based on quality of habitat and condition of culvert. Quadrant I crossings have high quality habitat and a poor culvert condition; Quadrant II crossings have high quality habitat and okay culverts; Quadrant III crossings have low quality habitat and poor culvert condition; Quadrant IV crossings have low quality habitat and okay culverts. More information included in CRWP Culvert Prioritization document.
Culvert Score (30) : a total score out of 30, based on constriction, gradient, and perch height. See CRWP Culvert Prioritization document for more information.
Ecological Score (30) : a total score of 30, based on fish species, upstream habitat quality, upstream habitat length. See CRWP Culvert Prioritization document for more information.
Total Score: Total of Culvert and Ecological scores.
Bonus Points (25) : a total score of 25, based on erosion, downstram barriers, and pipe condition categories. See CRWP Culvert Prioritization document for more information.
Total with Bonus Points: Total of Culvert and Ecological Scores and Bonus Points
Pipe Condition: 5-new, 4-good, 3-fair, 2-critical,1-poor (not functioning)
Culvert Type: AO- open bottom arch, AR- closed bottom arch, BOX – box culvert, BR -bridge, CIR – circular pipe, FBO – flat bottom oval, OT- other, OVL -oval, PA – pipe arch, RM – removed structure
Culvert Dimensions (WxH) : width x height, measured at inlet unless inlet was severely damaged.
Culvert Gradient: calculated from the most recent survey either ADFG 2002, 2007 surveys, or CRWP 2010 surveys.
Perch Outlet: calculated from the most recent survey either ADFG 2002, 2007 surveys, or CRWP 2010 surveys. Where information was not available, perch was visually estimated. If not visually perched, a ‘no’ would be entered, otherwise a visual estimate was made.
Constriction Ratio: calculated from CRWP 2010 inspections. Ups OHW and culvert widths were measured at every xing in 2010.
Fish Presence: If yes, species and life stage listed. CO – coho CT -cutthroat trout, DV- dolly varden, K-king, SO- sockeye, GR-grayling trout, ST- stickleback; a-adult, j-juvenile. Method in parentheses (MT – minnowtrap , visual, TEK – traditional ecological knowledge.) “Unknown” if waterway has potential habitat and/or connectivity to anadromous water but is not in the AWC or fish precense has not been confirmed.
Upstream Fish Habitat Quality: Determined using USFS and ADF&G protocols. See CRWP Prioritization Document for more information.
Upstream Fish Habitat Length: Open upstream length from culvert to known natural barriers or manmade (ie. dams). Length past other culverts upstream is included regardless of culvert type unless culvert is deemed a complete adult barrier. Length includes habitat for anadromous and resident fish.
Upstream OHW: Upstream ordinary high water width measured in feet. Measured outside the influence of the culvert. *Downstream channel widths were used due to altered ups widths from beaver activity or wetland areas.
Upstream Stream Gradient: upstream gradient measured over a ~ 300′ section with a clinometer. Measured outside the influence of the culvert.
Downstream Dominant Substrate: downstream dominant substrate. Bo-boulder, cob-cobble, grvl-gravel, sa-sand, si-silt, cl-clay, org-organics.
Downstream Subdominant Substrate: downstream subdominant substrate. Bo-boulder, cob-cobble, grvl-gravel, sa-sand, si-silt, cl-clay, org-organics.
Upstream Dominant Substrate: upstream dominant substrate. Bo-boulder, cob-cobble, grvl-gravel, sa-sand, si-silt, cl-clay, org-organics.
Upstream Subdominant Substrate: upstream subdominant substrate. Bo-boulder, cob-cobble, grvl-gravel, sa-sand, si-silt, cl-clay, org-organics.
Upstream Riparian Vegetation: dominant riparian vegetation on upstream banks
Downstream Riparian Vegetation: dominant riparian vegetation on downstream banks
anadromous waters: y -yes, n- no, U-unknown. at the xing is the waterway anadromous according to the AWC and /or fish presence as determined by 2010 surveys
